It's. About. Freakin'. Time.

I finally got the email Thursday, after three very long months of driving out to the middle school every afternoon: they have a bus for Ryder.  THEY HAVE A BUS FOR RYDER.

This has been such a journey.

(Before I even begin, let me just say: this is absolutely First World Problems.  I'm probably a Karen for even complaining about this as much as I have.  I have friends who are in the midst of actual problems and I feel like a terrible person for whining about this as much as I have.  So, yeah, I know, I know.  But still!)

BUT STILL.  How in the world do you not hire enough bus drivers for your school district???  And then how in the world does it take you 3 MONTHS to rectify that problem???

The first week and a half, I had to drive Ryder in the morning and pick him up in the afternoon.  Then they found a bus for the morning route, which was really helpful (and made my mornings a whole lot less stressful).  But to be honest, the morning drop off was easier and faster than afternoon pickup.  The school basically opened things up so that you could drop the kids off at any time, so it got rid of the long line of parents waiting, you could just pull up, push your kids out of the car,  and be on your way.  No such luck with the afternoon pickup-- leaving the school means trying to pull out from a T-intersection where you're the only one stopping, and the cars coming at you are going 55 mph on a windy country road.  It's fun!  So if you aren't one of the first parents there, you end up waiting in a huge line of cars for that T-stop for FOREVER.  Given the choice between sitting in a parking lot reading my book or sitting in stop-and-go traffic, I'd choose getting there ridiculously early every single time.  But this meant it took me a full hour to pick up Ryder every day.  This is an hour when I would normally be starting on dinner and folding laundry while Colton & Camille & Bentley tell me about their days.  Instead, I was stuck waiting in a line, no dinner in progress, my kids home without a grown up.  I hated it.  I hate it so much.

The other problem with giving us a morning bus (but no afternoon bus) was that it got everyone's hopes up that we'd get another bus if we just held on for another week or two.  But no, we went all of September, all of October, and most of November before that happened.  It really really sucked.

The whole thing sucked, and I don't use that phrase lightly.

But, starting Monday: no more.  Ryder has a bus.  For both the morning AND the afternoon.  Hallelujah.

My biggest fear now is that a bus driver will quit somewhere and we'll lose it all over again.  And this could happen-- one of the bus drivers at Craig's school just quit yesterday.  And the reason he quit?  Because some mom yelled at him over nothing and he was like, "I don't need to put up with this."  He didn't even give two weeks' notice or anything.  I really think they should put signs around that woman's house letting everyone know why they lost a driver.  What could she possibly have been thinking???

Anyway.  Wish us luck on our end of town.  We have a bus driver for Ryder!

Family Portraits 2023: The Outtakes

There's a whole range of how funny these are, but hopefully you'll get a laugh out of them...

Oh, Ryder...

And here we have Sad Bentley

Bentley and I managed to blink together here (this happened so often); I like how I've lifted up my eyebrows, as if this will make it okay that my eyes are closed...

This would be so cute if Colton weren't photobombing
And here Bentley is...  about to sneeze?  Or possibly on drugs...

I do like Bentley laughing here

Ryder's Blue Steel pose...  (He says it's from Studio C, but I'm not sure which one...)

And then laughing at how funny he is...

Cheesy, but I love this

Pensive Camille

Poor Camille, the only one of us smiling properly here...

Bentley is back to sneezing again...

Tough little man

This is one of my favorites: serious faces.  We look like we're about to kill you, and we aren't bothered by that fact at all, thankyouverymuch.  I don't think of myself as having RBF, but this might be proving that notion wrong...

That wind, Kendra's hair!

I love how Kendra is still gamely trying to smile through her windblown hair, though!

Why, hello random stranger back there!  At least she's smiling!

A dust mote floated by right between my eye and the camera lens!

This is almost so cute, except Craig reminds me a bit of Jack Nicholson in The Shining.  And once you see it, you can't unsee it...

This makes me laugh

And apparently it made me laugh in the moment, too...

We're so dorky.  But so happy!  I love these.

And finally, the Best Picture of the Day:
I am so glamorous!  In my defense, I was climbing through that fence wearing a dress and heels.  You SHOULD be pretty impressed that I could do it at all!  Even if it meant pulling this face...!

So there you have it-- what we actually looked like in between all those gorgeous shots!  😂

Family Portraits 2023

Adam did our family pictures again this year and they turned out so beautiful!  It's tough to get seven people all smiling, not blinking, and looking at the camera, so if we aren't all looking absolutely perfect in some of these, the blame definitely lies with us, and not with Adam.  This year, Bentley and I were the worst blinkers in the group.  And Ryder had the most trouble smiling normally and not crazily.  (There's always one...)  Adam took about 400 pictures and I'm only sharing my absolute favorites here, so consider yourself lucky!  My poor mom had to look at ALL 400 while she was here visiting!  (If she never comes again, now you know why...!)

We started out at this farm where he'd just done a wedding...

As is often the case, the first one is REALLY good!

This is now the wallpaper on my phone...

Isn't that farm gorgeous???
Time for some individual shots...

Camille is so sweet...

Probably my favorite from the entire photo shoot, and the one (slightly photoshopped) that is now the banner for this blog!  You'll also see it in a Christmas card coming your way soon!

You thought you were done now, didn't you?  HA!  That's just the first location!!!  We piled into the van and drove to a lookout spot and snapped a few more...
I think this shot is beautiful, except the background is almost too pretty to the point of looking kind of fake, right???  I mean, those clouds can't be real, can they?  IT'S REAL, I PROMISE!!!

And then we headed to Raven's Roost, in Shenandoah Park.  Unfortunately, it was very windy AND there were a lot of people there, so we had a tougher time getting good pictures here...
Poor Kendra had her hair ALL in her face, and it's just so obvious that Colton and Camille are freezing.  But that setting!!!!

One of Adam's wedding photographer friends suggested that for large groups, having them stand farther apart from each other worked really well and he was right!  This looks awesome, despite Kendra and my crazy hair!

But I still love huddling everyone in close together!  (At this point I gave up on my hair and just pulled it back in a ponytail!)
And THEN, as if that wasn't enough, I insisted on different outfits!!!!  My kids were thrilled let me tell you!  Having everyone change in the van is so fun!  (But I was impressed with how organized we were! Craig had also brought a TON of snacks to keep everyone happy, so all of that worked out really well, even if it was a pain.)
Time for our Bay Hay & Feed swag!!!  I really love this picture, but I wish we would have thought to separate the two purples and the two reds!  Very minor gripe.  I love Camille's knowing smile...

I like this one a lot, too.  Any time my hair is backlit and glowing, it makes me happy...  I think I secretly want to be Disney's Rapunzel or something...

I love the rolling green hills behind us and the sun peaking from behind the tree.  I wish we would have thought to move Ryder's sweatshirt (on the ground) out of the frame...  Ah, well...
We hopped in the car again, and drove a few miles down the road where things were a little leafier behind us:

This is too far away and probably too dark and artsy for a Christmas card, but I totally love it (and not just because my hair is, once again, backlit)

And this one DID make it on the Christmas card, but very small!
Bentley kept bugging Adam to take a fish-eye lens picture from up high.  So when he finally did, it turned out awesome and not at all funny like Bentley was hoping for!
Seriously, how cute is this?

We drove a little down the road again, chasing the last bit of sunlight, and ended with Adam frantically snapping pictures, standing on his toes to catch the light while we made Bentley change clothes again.  It was hectic and crazy, but we got a few really good final shots.  Adam was all ready to schedule another day of pictures, but I knew my kids were done.  We will probably do some more of just Bentley, but that was it for the rest of us!

Anyway, we did some quick individual portraits:

I try really hard to not brag about my kids too much on this blog, but I'm just going to say it: Kendra looks absolutely stunning in this shot.  My beautiful girl.

While we were doing those, Bentley threw on his suit for Round One of his senior portraits:

Then we pulled him back into a group shot and couldn't stop laughing at how out of place he now looked:
Bay Hay and Suits

Just girls

Just boys
(I love how if you look closely, you can see that Bentley is still wearing his suit under the sweatshirt-- classy!)

Mom with her boys

Dad with his girls
And one last shot of the whole family

Whew.  So many pictures!  I really can't even say enough how happy I was with all of them.  We're so lucky to have Adam!

Stay tuned, because my next post will be: Outtakes!  And some fo them are hilarious!
