Sunsets and Escape Rooms

The day after Halloween, a Friday, was pajama day, which seemed like an excellent idea for a bunch of tired kids with sugar hangovers.  The bus was super late picking up Camille, but there was such a gorgeous sunrise I really couldn't complain!

Craig took this one from his truck as he was driving to work.  It might be the only time my photography skills have beat his, but I had the advantage of standing still in a spot with a very clear view of the sky!

And then the next day, Saturday, I was able to babysit for my friend Kristen the other day while she and her husband went to the temple!  They lost Akston a year ago this month, and shortly after that learned that their next son, Benson, had a lesion in his brain and would immediately need the treatment that Akston wasn't able to get.  Miraculously enough, they'd banked cord blood from his baby sister, Esther, who was born (along with her twin Wesley) during the whole ordeal, and Esther was an exact match for Benson.  So he spent months in Boston with his Dad while he underwent treatment and is now healing beautifully.  But it has been A YEAR for this poor family, and when she asked if I could babysit, I was THRILLED to actually be able to do anything to help out.

Their oldest, Ember, is the most helpful girl ever, and Camille also pitched in.  I brought a bunch of Ryder's really cool Imaginext toys and threw them in the back of Craig's truck, which basically functioned like a play pen and they played happily there almost the entire time.  And Esther slept in her stroller and then allowed me to carry her around as long as I was wearing my reflective sunglasses and she could pretend she was basically being carried around by herself.  Whatever, that works!  So we had a great time and Kristen and Nat were able to enjoy the temple for a bit.  Yay for beautiful Saturday afternoons at the temple!

After I voted Tuesday morning (I get SO EXCITED to vote!), I went walking in the woods and caught this lovely bit of sun poking through the autumny trees

Remember how in the previous post I mentioned my friend Kim and her awesome trunk-or-treat trunk?  Not only did she make all those cool potions bottles, she also set up an escape room in her basement!!!!  Who does cool stuff like that???  We (Craig and I) got to do it on a Friday evening with a bunch of other grown ups, and it took us a little over an hour to complete and it was just as awesome as the professional ones I've done!  She had ciphers, a safe, candles, scales that had to be balanced just so, a cauldron where the fire would change color...  So many cool puzzles!  So then they invited the YW to come do it, and we figured out they could do it on Election Day, since there was no school (because the schools are used for voting).

So I enjoyed watching as the young women struggled to figure out all the clues, then Kim also fed them dinner (how nice is she???).  I loaded everyone into the van and took them to Get Air, a trampoline park, where they joined the young men for their actual Tuesday night activity-- two hours of jumping and dodgeball.  Talk about the most fun afternoon ever!

So that was a super fun day, followed by me staying up half the night watching the election results.  I was SO RELIEVED when it was all declared and done in the morning, none of this dragging it out for weeks like in 2020 (and 2000!  I still remember that!).  

The following Thursday evening was all-county band, and we got to watch Ryder perform!  I really enjoy these concerts-- the music is usually quite fun, but they only do about three songs, so the concert isn't too long.  A win all around!  (I was a little surprised when it turned out the all-county orchestra was also performing, but they were pretty quick, too, so I'm not complaining!)

And then on Saturday, Ryder got contact lenses and a haircut!  You can barely recognize him any more, he looks so grown up!

On Friday (sorry, this isn't quite chronological-- it's hard to get the photos in the right order!), Craig and I sat with Megan at the Fluvanna v. Monticello football game.  We were mostly there because Kendra's marching band was playing stand tunes and we wanted to hear them one last time for the season.

And then Saturday afternoon I had choir stuff and Craig put the kids to work raking leaves.  They had so much fun-- they actually managed to build a leaf fort with a tunnel and everything!

My choir, meanwhile, was rehearsing with Charlottesville Ballet, we were doing a few songs with them for their Veteran's Day Concert.  Unfortunately I didn't really understand what the deal was with the concert so I told Craig to come and bring the kids, thinking it would just be a nice, short, free concert.  I didn't know that, after our three songs, the ballerinas would keep performing for another hour!  I LOVE ballet so I was thrilled to get to sit and enjoy that, but Craig and the kids...  well, let's just say that they were very gracious about me filling their afternoon with ballet!

The original plan had been for Craig to make quesadillas, but we felt everyone deserved a night off after that, so we went to Cook-Out instead-- and ran into Chris and Julie Shaw with their kids!  So that ended up being a fun, spontaneous double date!

Halloween and Everything Else in October

After all that rain, we've gone on to have THE MOST GORGEOUS FALL EVER.  I'm not exaggerating even a tiny bit.  It's been warm and sunny, and occasionally cold at night (although not this week, where it's been in the 80s!).  I'm enjoying it so much.  I've listened to so many podcasts as I've been out walking in it (and occasionally even running).  And then I like to finish up my walks by detouring into the woods behind our house and stopping at the stream to listen to it burbling along.  Sometimes there's sunlight reflecting of the water and you can even see little tiny fish fighting to swim upstream.  It's pure happiness.

Bentley has been experiencing his first round of midterms!  One of his professors brought his dog to class to soothe everyone, so here's Bentley enjoying his turn with the pup!  He has informed us that he is TOTALLY getting a pet when he has his own house some day.

We went with our friends the Huffs and the Gaskins to Blackfriar's Playhouse to see Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors and had a lovely evening!  

We went on their dress rehearsal night, where the tickets were "pay what you will"-- much cheaper and just as fun!!!  (Also, this is a TERRIBLE angle of me.  Why, Craig, why?)

The stake organized a youth service day where they basically threw a typical church Halloween party for a local foster agency.  Since Craig and I both had to be there, we got permission to bring Colton and Camille along, too.  Craig was at the "doughnuts on a string" game with the Young Men, while I supervised the Young Women doing face painting.  A wonderful time was had by all, and I think this might become a recurring activity, which would be A-okay with me!

Speaking of the Young Men, they joined up with the activity days boys to carve pumpkins (while the YW were wearing goofy hats and playing live Among Us!)

And Camille finished another session of tennis with Girls Rule the Court!  This time around, it was held at a park much closer to my house and I didn't have a bored Colton hanging around with me, so rather than just dropping her off, I would bring a camping chair and sit and read the entire time (and occasionally watch a YouTube video or something equally mindless).  I might have enjoyed this time even more than Camille did!  It was great.

They were trying to do some promotional stuff for it, and asked if any of the parents were willing to be interviewed talking about the program, so I finally volunteered.  (Because I never mind being the center of attention!)  I wish I had been wearing mascara, though!  If I ever see the video, I'll post it here.

I started taking pictures of the pretty trees on my walks.  I'M SORRY I KNOW IT'S BORING.  But all that gorgeous color will be gone soon and I just want to remember it a bit longer.  Indulge me just a bit, okay?

Rather than our usual pumpkin patch and corn maze, we decided to try the Crozet Tunnel for a Halloween treat!  One of Craig's coworkers said it was really cool (and you only had to pay for parking so it was a lot cheaper than a corn maze).  It was fun, but we'd heard they lit it up for Halloween, but it turned out they'd just set up white bags with tea lights every ten feet.  Honestly, since there were stars cut out of the bags, it almost felt more Christmas-y than Halloween-y?  We had a nice time, but were underwhelmed.  Oh, well!  We got Adam to come along with us, so it was nice to spend some time all together!

And then it was the ward Halloween party!  Craig had ordered costumes for Colton and Camille, but then we realized Colton's costume had gotten left in the cart and wouldn't even be arriving in time for actual Halloween.  And Ryder hadn't chosen a costume at all.  So suddenly Craig had to get creative.  Fortunately, he's really good that!  He spent the whole day making their costumes and they turned out AWESOME:

And Ryder, meanwhile, is a wind-blown man.  I totally stole this idea from my buddy Shaun Rushforth.  (But Craig made it actually work!)

And I LOVED how the 12-year-old girls all coordinated to dress up as Strawberry Shortcake and her friends!  

The next day was the primary program.  Who thought that was a good idea???  But it actually went pretty well.  My favorite moments (besides my own two kids being awesome) were when a little girl hung from the podium giggling maniacally, and when Cole Sellers suddenly cut his little talk short so that he could drop to the floor and crawl away army-style back to his dad.  Classic!  This was Colton's last primary program and Megan thought to take a picture of him and his whole class:

Jason, William, Colton, Gideon.  I love how Jason and Gideon are slouching and/or leaning against the wall, but they're STILL way taller than William and Colton!  Anyway-- these boys will all be passing the sacrament in January!!!!!

Craig decided he also wanted to take pictures of the trees.  I think he may have adjusted the colors to make it even more impressive, but wow!

And the schools had various dress up days, but not an actual costume day for Halloween, which makes very little sense to me, but I also don't care enough to get worked up over it.  So here are Ryder and Colton for Hawaii day:

Actual Halloween was BUSY!  We usually go to a neighbor's house to eat pizza before everyone goes trick-or-treating, but the pizza was a little late arriving, and the friends we'd invited to trick-or-treat with us all showed up at our house early, so Kendra was at home texting us to hurry up and get back!  Sorry, Kendra!  Ryder went with Sawyer and Rory, Colton joined up with Walker, Leo, and Sam, and Camille had her friend June (and June's parents) come over.  And Kendra headed to Evan's house to watch some non-scary Halloween movies.  Unfortunately, in all the chaos, we forgot to take pictures of anyone in their costumes!  But I guess no one really cared by then anyway, they were too excited about getting candy!

While they were out trick-or-treating, I got to hang out in the driveway with Amy, Adam, and my firepit giving out candy.  It was a LOVELY (and warm!) evening and I thoroughly enjoyed myself!  A great end to a busy month!
