The Poem I Wrote

When Tracy learned that Adam's family would be performing at the rehearsal dinner, she felt like it might be a good idea for our family to do something, also.  But then she started second-guessing herself, and worried that maybe she was being weirdly competitive.  So she felt stuck.  She told me this, so I suggested that I write a poem (originally, we heard Adam's family was doing a poem based on "Casey at the Bat"), but I told her that if she didn't like it or changed her mind about it, she could cancel the whole thing without hurting my feelings.  So we proceeded that way.

I actually like writing silly poems (nothing serious), but I seldom get around to doing it any more (back when I could get extra credit for writing a sonnet, I could CRANK those suckers out!), so it was fun to have an excuse to get back to that.

I based the flow of my poem very loosely on "The Cremation of Sam McGee", so if you're familiar with that one, this will make slightly more sense...

The Marriage of Tracy B

Our Mormon friends have dreams without ends
But the happiest they ever did dream
Was a morn in the spring, with plenty of bling,
When Tracy B held her wedding

Now Tracy B lawyered in NYC, where the crowds all hustle and bustle
But soon she got bored and felt kind of unmoored, in that place where newspapers rustle
She packed up her stuff and declared, “That’s enough! I’m off to seek my fate.
“I’ll try life as a doula, forget about moo-lah, maybe I’ll e’en find my mate!”

Now this guy Adam N, he was only a friend, but he organized fun things to do
And she thought he was handsome so whenever he planned some
She came hoping it’d be just for two
And as luck would have it, he finally planned it
For her birthday dinner, no less!
And so when he asked, she quickly said, Yes, she thought she could probably stand it.

Things bloomed quickly from there, they became a great pair
There seems to be nothing they lack.
They’re so happy they could burst (being single’s the WORST!)
And Tracy even wears stuff that’s not black!

Neither parents were here for one and a half year
So I guess it’s good they found each other
And us Bentley girls here will all raise a loud cheer

Cuz we’ve finally got a new brother!

The WEDDING!

Saturday morning, the day of the Big Event, dawned dark and early and pouring rain.  Craig couldn't sleep, and was tossing and turning so much that he woke me up at 4am.  Perfect.  The good news was that I got a hot shower that way.  It turned out that Craig had ideas percolating in his brain, and he finally found Cameron's laptop and got to work on a very long letter welcoming Adam to what has been called The Bentley Boys Club.  More on that in a different post!

We got everyone breakfast and everyone who wanted one got a shower.  We also packed lunches (egg salad sandwiches-- thank you, Easter!) and snacks and everything else we thought we might need.

In a surprise move, Craig had decided the night before that we needed to spend Saturday night on Bainbridge Island.  I'd figured we'd sleep at Natalie's place again because a) that was a faster trip to the airport for our 10am flight and b) all our stuff (and sleeping bags) was already there and all set up.  But Craig pointed out that that would mean missing out on the end of the evening when most of my family would stand around the kitchen discussing the events of the day.  It would be too sad to miss that time together.  Plus, the drive back to Natalie's after such a long day was going to be killer.  So much so that Natalie herself was planning on staying on the island, and was sort of mystified as to whether or not us staying at her house would force her (as a good host) to change her plans as well.  And finally, that would also mean no one would be around to say good-bye to us, which seemed rather pathetic.  So with all that, we finally agreed to spend our last night on Bainbridge.  This had the domino-effect of having to change around EVERYONE'S sleeping arrangements (more people had arrived to try and squeeze into both houses), but Rachael and Ian were very kind about helping us make that work.

So we were also packing up all our stuff.  Again.  It was a busy morning.

But I still found time to text Tracy this awesome picture and suggest that she do her hair the same as Camille's:

I like how Samuel is sharing his blanket with her here
Despite a mouthful of crackers, Nolan is still looking very dapper in his tuxedo
Getting all ready!

We didn't need to leave until 9:30am.  Bless Tracy and Adam for choosing an 11 o'clock time instead of something earlier!  We needed every minute of that morning!  As we drove to the temple, it was still dark and cloudy.  But there was a short break in the rain, at least!

The Seattle temple is still pretty, even on a grey day!

There were SO MANY kids in the waiting area during the sealing.  Thank heavens for Tracy who-- along with planning everything else-- had also managed to organize all the babysitting and made nametags for the kids so everyone watching them could keep them straight!  It was a herculean effort, to be sure!  Me, I got so excited to see Tracy that I begged a temple worker to let me up to the bride's room so I could say Hi.  They weren't really sure they could make it work, but were kind enough to let me go upstairs just in case I could find her.  And luck was on my side-- as the elevator doors opened, she was standing there waiting to get on!  So I got to give her a quick hug and tell her she looked beautiful and then hurry back down to the waiting room.

When they finally had everyone seated, Craig did a quick count and there were 70 people there in the sealing room, the most I have EVER seen.  Tracy and Adam are so loved!!!  The sealing was beautiful and Tracy and Adam just seemed to be glowing they were so happy.  At one point they were kissing and the sealer (who is also the Temple President, and is in my parents' ward) laughed and said, "I seem to have lost control of the situation!"  It was hilarious and happy.

A whole mess of cousins and my Aunt Ann!

Here's the crowd of people waiting for them to come outside.  (I felt a little bad for regular people who just wanted to get into the temple-- they sort of had to fight their way through all of us!)

Cherise and Regan, Tracy's friends from high school

When I'd gone upstairs for the sealing, I could see through the windows that the sun was actually shining outside.  I started to get my hopes up, but alas, by the time Tracy and Adam had come outside, it was back to pouring rain again.  It didn't seem to dampen anyone's spirits, though!
I guess they look kind of happy...

Everyone wanted a picture with the bride
The rain made it hard to take pictures.  We pretty much had to take all of them under the covered area, so that was kind of lame and I felt really bad for the photographer (who handled so many crowds of people like a champ!).  Even if the sun had come out, though, it still would have been too muddy and wet to take many pictures around the temple grounds, so maybe it was for the best that it wasn't even an option...?
Here's the Bentley clan with Adam.  So, I have to explain here-- Tracy told us to wear either navy blue or teal.  How did I end up being the only one to wear teal????

It was still pretty, even with the rain

Once we were done with pictures, we threw jackets back on and loaded up our car and drove to the ferry.  We ended up getting in line right behind Ian and Rachael, with my parents just a few cars over and a bunch of my cousins on our boat, too!  Also, the photographer from our Easter Sunday shoot had just emailed me all the pictures from that, so we were frantically scrolling through all her work and swapping stories and kids and husbands were dashing over to Kid Valley to get milkshakes while we waited.  Fun times!

There I am holding Harrison in the rain

We went to my parents house for about an hour-- I got all our beds set up for the night, and Natalie and Rachael were busy feeding babies.  Before long it was time to head over to Wing Point for the ring ceremony and reception.

The ring ceremony was held in a tent outside, but the wind was blowing REALLY hard and making everyone nervous.  Fortunately my Uncle Bob, who was officiating, is a news reporter and he assured everyone that in his line of work, the tent blowing away would make for a GREAT story, so there was no need to worry!  It got everyone laughing and things proceeded beautifully.

I'm not crying, YOU'RE crying!
Still looking pretty happy about the whole thing

They had written vows, but at one point Adam flubbed his lines and promised to always put himself before Tracy.  Oops!  He looked properly horrified by the gaff and assured everyone that that was NOT what he meant!

I guess we can have a kissing picture in here...

The reception was immediately afterwards, in the Wing Point clubhouse.  There were close to 200 people there, with a sit-down dinner and ice cream from Mora and dancing and everything.  It was lovely, although my kids made it pretty hard for me to actually chat with my cousins and ward members and various people that I was excited to see.

Craig got to read part of his letter welcoming Adam into the Bentley Boy's Club, which got a lot of laughs and a few tears from some of my sisters.  Once it got late enough, I sent Craig home to put the kids to bed and I stayed and helped get flowers put away in my parents' car.  Tracy wanted to stay until the end, so I was one of the few people still there to get to say goodbye and wish her well.

Once we were finally home, I put on my jammies and the grownups enjoyed standing around in the kitchen until about one in the morning talking about what a wonderful day it had been.

And it had been.  Absolutely wonderful.

Bachelor Party and Rehearsal Dinner

Sorry, I promise we'll get to the actual wedding.  Eventually.  But it was the very last day of the trip and I like to keep things chronological!  I'm not actually trying to build up suspense or anything, I'm just kind of boring and methodical when I blog about trips...

Anyway, while we were running around the Pacific Science Center, the rest of my family held a concert for the little kids and Brian roamed the streets of Seattle taking awesome pictures of architecture.  And I'm totally going to steal some of his photos to post here.  (If you ever want to order some amazing art photography, definitely check out his website, brianmadden.zenfolio.com.)  All the really amazing photos in this post you can assume are Brian's.

Once we'd had enough of the science center, Craig left to meet up with Brian and I drove the kids back to the ferry and hurried home to Natalie's dinner of baked ziti.  The boys were all heading to Adam's bachelor party.

And Ian and Craig!

Adam had decided that he wanted to show all his besties how you prepare crab, so that was what the bachelor party was all about.  Craig commented that, given my family's aversion to seafood, we probably would have been less disappointed if Adam had just hired a stripper.  Ah, well.  The men had a great time, even if us Bentley girls were kind of disgusted by the whole thing!

Yum?  I guess?

They had fun.  I made sure Craig brushed his teeth REALLY WELL before kissing me.

Friday morning we headed back to Natalie's.  My cousin Anne and her 5 kids were coming to town, and we'd agreed to all meet up at Natalie's place.  Our friend Juliana Hogan also came with her toddler (and husbands for both of these ladies, obviously!), so we had a LOT of people.  I think we had 17 kids running around the house?  It was insane.  But awesome.  But apparently it was so nuts that we never thought to take any pictures.  So you'll just have to imagine that, I guess!

Friday night was the rehearsal dinner, and Natalie had arranged for our youngest kids to be babysat at her house.  That way they could hopefully get a decent night's sleep and not be crazy for the wedding.  Also, sleeping at her house meant we didn't have to deal with the ferries for getting to the temple in the morning, which was nice.  Her awesome babysitter showed up and we explained where each kids' pajamas and sleeping quarters were and wished her luck.  Then we drove into the city (with Bentley and Kendra) and met up at the docks on Lake Union, where Tracy and Adam had arranged a dinner cruise for their immediate family.  It rained almost the entire week we were there, but for Friday we got PERFECT weather.

Ferries and mountains.  That's my island!

First time we'd seen Mt. Rainier all week!

We had gotten there pretty early (thanks, Natalie!) so we stood around waiting and enjoying the sunshine.  Tracy, Adam, and both sets of parents arrived on a sea plane (!!!) and then we all got on the boat and it got on its way.  And it. was. so. FUN.

This isn't the actual plane they arrived on-- we kept waving at all the planes not knowing which one was theirs.  But it looked just like this!

I like this shot of Craig and I

We got to meet Adam's brothers and sisters and parents and eat super yummy food.  And the captain played tour guide and would tell us all about some of the amazing houses we were seeing-- Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos are the main people I remember hearing about, but there were a few others, too.  It was fun seeing their homes (and boats with helicopter pads on top!).

I think this is Bill Gates' dock?  It was made out of purple heartwood, which I've never heard of, and cost a million dollars.

In between courses, Tracy and Adam had planned various forms of entertainment.  Here, my sisters and I are reading a poem I wrote (I'll probably post that on the old blog eventually-- I can't resist showing off).

And here Adam's family is performing a song that they wrote.  (I LOVE that his Dad plays the banjo!!!!!!!)

The kids table-- I was glad I didn't have to worry about my little guys
MC-ing the whole thing-- I think here they were quizzing the families to see how much we knew about our soon-to-be-in-laws.  Fortunately we could help each other out!

This gives you a better feel for the size of our group and everything

The captain let the kids come up and steer the boat for a bit, so they loved that!

I might need to frame this shot.  This was where the boat went from Lake Union to Lake Washington.

Or this one...
Or this one!  These are all Brian's pictures

We had the BEST time.  That was probably my favorite activity of the whole week (not including the wedding).  I'm so glad the weather cooperated for us and that we got to enjoy everyone's company for such a lovely evening.

We got home and hurried to bed.  The babysitter had done a great job.  The kids were all asleep.  And tomorrow was the big day...!
